About the Artist
Minister Michael Mahendere is a Zimbabwean gospel artist, songwriter, producer, worship leader and pastor whose musical journey spans more than three decades. Born on 28 May 1983, Mahendere grew up in a Christian and musical family and began writing songs at the age of seven. His early musical development took place alongside his brothers as part of the family gospel group Mahendere Brothers, with whom he recorded his first album at the age of eleven. Their debut project, Mwari Mukuru, released in 1994, became a notable gospel recording in Southern Africa. As he developed as a musician, Mahendere expanded his abilities beyond singing and songwriting, teaching himself to play instruments including guitar, keyboard and drums. His musical experiences also included work outside the family group and involvement in various musical projects, giving him opportunities to broaden his understanding of performance, arrangement and production. He later served as a music director at the University of Zimbabwe, where he was involved in musical and choral projects. Mahendere became particularly prominent through his work with the United Family International Church (UFIC) Choir. In 2011, he led the choir in a new arrangement of the worship song “Makanaka Jesu,” which became one of the defining recordings of his career and received significant attention in Zimbabwe. The song helped establish him more widely as a worship minister and songwriter. In 2012, Mahendere began his solo recording journey with Direct Worship, releasing Getting Personal With God. The project marked the beginning of a successful series that would become closely associated with his ministry. Subsequent releases included Getting Personal With God 2, Getting Personal With God 3 and Getting Personal With God, Vol. 4, featuring songs such as “Mumoyo,” “Salt of the Earth,” “Chiiko,” “Zvaringana,” “Kudza Jehovah,” and “Tangai Neni.” His musical catalogue has continued to develop through worship projects including Worship Classics, The SPOW (Secret Place of Worship), Victory Classical Worship, and the Classical Worship series. His music frequently draws on Zimbabwean and Shona Christian musical traditions while incorporating contemporary worship and broader orchestral influences. This combination has helped give his recordings a distinctive Zimbabwean character while allowing them to connect with audiences beyond the country. Mahendere has also collaborated with gospel musicians from Zimbabwe and other African countries. His collaborations include work with artists such as Loyiso Bala on “Chiiko” and other gospel ministers across the region. Through such collaborations, he has participated in a wider African gospel music community and contributed to cross-border Christian music projects. Over the years, Mahendere has received recognition through gospel and music awards, including honours from the Permican Awards and Independent National Gospel Music Awards (INGOMA). His work has also earned recognition for both his songwriting and recorded music. Beyond recording and performing, Mahendere's ministry includes pastoral work, worship leadership and mentoring. His career has increasingly combined music with Christian ministry, using worship, songwriting and teaching as avenues through which he encourages people in their relationship with God. He has also expressed an interest in helping develop younger African creatives and musicians. Mahendere continues to record and perform with Direct Worship, with his more recent catalogue including Classical Worship, Vol. 3 — Nziyo Dzedu released in 2025 and the 2026 live single “Armour of God.” His official ministry site describes his current work as continuing a musical journey that has taken him across four continents while remaining rooted in worship and Zimbabwean musical expression. Through more than thirty years of involvement in gospel music, Minister Michael Mahendere has developed a ministry that brings together songwriting, worship, musical production, pastoral ministry and mentorship. His body of work continues to reflect his commitment to Christian worship while drawing strongly from the musical heritage in which he was raised.
